Institute was founded in 1957. It is a part of the Georgian Academy of Sciences since 1957

Direction of investigation:
"Conformity of the historical development of the flora and fauna of Black Sea -Caspian Sea region and paleobiological foundation of biostratigraphy." The Program of Fundamental Investigation of the Georgian Academy of Sciences is - "The Vegetable and Animal kingdom, evolutionary and ecological basis of their protection and reestablish."

Director:
Guram Mchedlidze. Doctor of Biological Sci., candidate of geological-mineralogical Sci., senior research worker, professor of the Tbilisi State University.

There are 34 scientific workers in the Institute, among them: Academician, 18 - Doctors and 18 - Candidate of Sciences.

Institute of Paleobiology has contacts with the scientific centers of France, Spain, Italy, USA, Romania, Poland, Russia. It carries on common research work together with: France - "Making of Europan basis of palinological dates (INTAS program 94-3325) Spain - "The biostratigraphical correlation of Plio-Pleistocene mammalian faunas of Georgia and Spain (The Crussafont Institute of Paleontology). Finland- "The monitoring of European plants pollen." Sweden - "The history of North European lakes." (Project IGBP BIOME 6000). Poland - "The history of Eastern European Flora." (The Sheffer Institute of Botany).

Publication:
Periodical - J. "General problems of evolutionary paleontology." Publication was discontinue in 1975.

Misscelations:
There are 3 department in the Institute Paleobiology: Paleobotany, where study Cainozoic floras by leaves imprints, palinology, carpology and cuticular analisis; Invertebrate paleontology where study - microforaminiferas, nummulites, ostracodas, ammonites, gastropods and bivalves; Vertebrate paleontology, it carries on research works on all groups of vertebrates. The main attention are given to terrestrial and marine mammals paleontology and paleoneurology.
