What is AcNet?!
AcNet is the name of Network Operation Center of Georgian
Academy of Sciences (GAS). It started operating in 1993. The major goal of AcNet is to
provide the Internet connectivity and wide scope of Internet services to the Research Institutions and structures of GAS (more than 60).
These services include E-mail (POP3 and UUPC), Dial-up, Leased Lines (Wired and Wireless)
and Web Hosting (Virtual Hosting, Design and Maintenance).
AcNet plays the vital role in planning and development of the network infrastructure of
GAS. AcNet has tight co-operation with High Energy
Physics Institute (HEPI) at TSU which is
responsible for involving the High Education Schools in the Internet. HEPI ensures the
work of the satellite station (64Kb link to Hamburg (DESY - DFN)). Both Centers had been
established and are operating with the support of several international grants and
projects (NATO, INTAS,
SOROS).
At this moment we realize the wireless network for part of R&E Institutes in Tbilisi
and in near future we propose (together with PTT) to construct the ATM network all over
the territory of Georgia.
The daily operations of AcNet-NOC are managed by the special team (10 persons) at the Muskhelishvili Institute of Computational Mathematics (ICM) of
GAS.
ICM represents Georgia in Central and Eastern European
Networking Association (CEENet).
The information found at this Site would be extremely useful for AcNet users, and we
strongly encourage them to browse it periodically and look for news and updates.
