Date of foundation:
Mtskheta Institute of Archaeology was founded on the 1st of April, 1994.

The main scientific problem:
history of Kartly kingdom and its capital "The Greater City of Mtskheta" from begining the earliest ages, their contacts and relations with Caucasian, Eastern and Western civilizations, publishing the results of investigations;
Archaeology - towns and urban life in ancient Georgia
a) Mtskheta - the oldest capital of Georgia
b) Settlements and cemeteries in Greater Mtskheta

Director: Andrya Apakidze, academician, a vice-president of the Academy, corresponding member.

Doctors: Andrya Apakidze, Guram Kipiani (2)
Candidates of historical science: Vakhtang Nikolaishvily, George Manjgaladze, Anzor Sikharulidze, Temur Bibilury. (4).

Researches:
a) Studying of Geogian antiquities which are now in the museums of Russia
b) Arrangement of joint exhibitions (together with the theatre musseum of Russia, in Moscow, in 1994, named: "Georgian Pottery yesterday, today...")
c) Mtskheta Institute of Archaeology is going to arrange another joint exhibition in Moskow with the participation of the "Society of cultural relations with the Georgians, living in foreign countries", "Georgians' friendly society" in Moscow and Moscow municipality. The exhibition will be called: "Georgian Antiquities in Mosow's Museums and Archives"

Mtskheta Institute of Archaeology had exchanged scientific literature with the State Museum of Moscow, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Hermitage of St. Petersburg and Moskow Library o Foreign Literature

The periodicals of the Institute:
"Mtskheta" - the results of archaeological investigations, vol. XI, redactor A. Apakidze, academician, "Metsniereba", 1996.

The staff of the Institute is preparing two books:
a) "The Greater Mtskheta" - bibliography (history, archaeology, ethnography, art history).
b) "Archaeological Dictionary" - in the Georgian, Russian and English languages
c) "Mtskheta" series, volume XII.
