Date of Foundation:
The Institute was founded in the system of the Academy of Sciences in 1957

The mainstreams of scientific works are:
Problems of ecologically safe technological processes of mining and processing of mineral resources, perfection and development of the equipment, design and construction of underground structures and research of scientific problems of constructing.

The main direction of researches involve:
Scientific problems of mining of ore mineral resources, problems of mechanics of rigid and fluid body as well as that of gas, scientific problems of benefication of mineral resources.

Director:
Levan Japaridze, Corresponding Member of Georgian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Engineering Academy since 1978, doctor of technical sciences since 1982.

Academic members:
The personnel mainstay of the institute are 12 doctors of technical sciences and 50 candidates of technical sciences.

Research contacts to foreign countries:
The Institute had close scientific links with research centers of Czechoslovakian, Hungarian, German, Polish and Austrian scientific centers. Joint works have been carried out with the Institute of Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences and with the mining Institute of Wrostlav Polytechnical Institute, Poland and with some other foreign Institutions. No joint work are being done at the present time.

Periodical editions of the Institute:
The Institute systematically published the following collections of scientific works till 1991:

• "Mining electromechanics and transport"
• "The technology of processing of mines and benefication of mineral resources"
• "Rock pressure and strengthening of tunnels".
