Date of Foundation:
The Institute of Metals and Mining (from 1957 the Institute of Metallurgy) was founded in 1945 and affiliated to the Georgian Academy of Sciences.

The main research directions of the Institute are:
The basics of the chemistry and physics of metallurgical processes; chemical thermodynamics of inorganic materials; preparation and complex treatment of raw materials; fabrication of metals, alloys and metal powders; physics and chemistry of preparation of new inorganic materials; materials science of semi- and superconductors, metallic and metalloceramic alloys and composites; corrosion and protection of metals.

Director:
Ilia Baratashvili - Corresponding Member of Georgian Academy of Sciences, professor, doctor of technical sciences, laureate of the State prize (1989), G.Nikoladze prize (1984) and P.Melikishvili prize (1992).

In the Institute are leading researches:
Academicians Guram Gvelesiani and Irakli Jordania

17 doctors and 106 candidates of sciences.

Contacts:
At the present time the Institute has no relations with any foreign institutes.

Publications:
The Institute was publishing till 1990 "Proceedings of Materials Science and Corrosion of Metals". In all 9 volumes were published.
