The Institute was founded in 1932. Since 1942 it consists in the system of Georgian Academy of Sciences. Till 1986 it was called the Institute of Georgian Literature.

The main scientific courses of the Institute are:

    The History of Georgian Literature (V-XX cc.);
    The Theory of Literature;
    Critics;
    Journalism;
    Textology;
    Georgian-foreign Literary Relations (Georgian-Oriental, Georgian-western);
    The History and Theory of Folklore.

At the present the Institute works upon the following problems:

The Ways of Development of Ancient Georgian Literature;
Poetic of "The Knit in the Tiger's Skin";
"The Knit in the Tiger's Skin" and Georgian Literature of Middle Ages;
Hisorical and Literary Problematic of "The Knit in the Tiger's Skin";
The History of Literary and Aesthetic Mentality of XIX centiry;
The Role of Journalism in Development of National-Liberation Movement;
Typologycal Correlations of Georgian and Europian Literary Methods and Courses;
The History of Georgian Folklore and Folkloristic;
Problems of History and Theory of Textology;
The Course of Theory of Literature;
The Main Tendencies of Development of Modern Georgian Literature;
Computer Documentation of Archive of Folklore Materials.

Nowadays the Institute is directed by a temporary executive Doctor of philological sciences, professor Guram Benashvili (*1941).

The main scientific potential of the institute is performed by one academician, Doctor of philological sciences, professor George Tsitsishvili (*1922), 37 doctors of sciences and 116 candidates of sciences.

The Institute has scientific contacts with the following foreign scientific offices abroad:

    The University of Gottingen (Germany)
    The University of Sorbon (France)
    The University of Vienna (Austria)
    The University of Warsaw (Poland)
    The University of Pergamo (Italy)
    The University of Bilbao (Spain)
    The University of Damascus (Syria)
    The University of Tenre (Japan)

From the very first year of its existence the Institute annually published the collection of scientific works "Literary Researches" (18 volumes were published). Later the individual sections of "Literary Researches" were published as independent collections (each letter is accompanied by Russian Resume):

  • "Problems of Folklore"
  • "Problems of Ancient Georgian Literature and Rusvelology"
  • "Georgian Literary Problems of XIX c."
  • "Problems of Theory and Aesthetic of Literature"
  • "Problems of Literary Correlation"
  • "Problems of Journalism"
  • "Problems of Soviet Literature"

Nowadays publishing of the collections is stopped.
In 1990-1996 the Institute accomplished publishing of the Journal "Literature and Art". 26 volumes have been published (materials are published in Georgian).
In 1994 the Institute began to publish the informational bulletin "Georgian Folklore" (materials are published in English, German and French). Two volumes were published. The third and the fourth volumes are ready for publishing.
