The Institute was founded in 1932. Since 1942 it consists in the system of Georgian Academy of Sciences. Till 1986 it was called the Institute of Georgian Literature. The main scientific courses of the Institute are: The History of Georgian Literature (V-XX cc.); At the present the Institute works upon the following problems:
Nowadays the Institute is directed by a temporary executive Doctor of philological sciences, professor Guram Benashvili (*1941). The main scientific potential of the institute is performed by one academician, Doctor of philological sciences, professor George Tsitsishvili (*1922), 37 doctors of sciences and 116 candidates of sciences. The Institute has scientific contacts with the following foreign scientific offices abroad: The University of Gottingen (Germany) From the very first year of its existence the Institute annually published the collection of scientific works "Literary Researches" (18 volumes were published). Later the individual sections of "Literary Researches" were published as independent collections (each letter is accompanied by Russian Resume):
Nowadays publishing of the collections is stopped.
