The Folklore Archive of the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature

The Folklore Archive is a scientific organization that was founded in 1932 on the basis of the Museum of Georgia. Since 1936 it has been part of the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature.

The aims and objects of the Archive are to collect Georgian and Caucasus folklore, the scientific analysis of the material and its publication.

The main components of the Archive’s work are:

Making computer documentation of folklore materials.
Making fieldwork expeditions.
Making scientific research.
Publishing of the materials and research results.
Organizing scientific conferences and workshops.

Past and Present Projects conducted by the Archive:

Computerization of the materials kept in the Folklore Archive: from Oct 1, 1996 to Dec 31, 1996. Financed by the Open Society Georgia Foundation (Soros Foundation) and the Institute of Georgian Literature.

Scientific discussion meeting: "Problem of Heredity in the History of Georgian Culture": Oct 21-22, 1996. Financed by the Fridrich Ebert Foundation.

Classifying all of the Archive material according to its genre and theme and entering into the computer: from Jan 1, 19997 to Dec 31, 1999. Being financed by the Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

Adding to the computer files of Georgian folklore data newly acquired during a recent collecting expedition: from Jan 1, 1998 to Dec 31, 1998. Financed by the Open Society Georgia Foundation (Soros Foundation) and the Institute of Georgian Literature.
