In 1957 in the Institute of Economy Academy of Science was founded department of the Law, and in 1990 after set of reorganization in system of the Academy the Institute of the State and Law was formed.

Subjects of study:
Science of the Law; theoretical problems of the State and Law; the Civil and Corporeal Law problems; Criminal Law and Criminology problems; problem of the State and Administrative Law; problem of the International Law; the Procedure Law; problems of a History of the State and Law.

In Institute works 5 doctors of sciences and15 candidate of sciences.

The Institute actively cooperates to various International Centers of Sciences: Max Plank International Institute of Comperative Criminal Law (Fraiburg,Germany),. Max Plank International Institute of Private Law (Hambug, Germany) and others.

The Institute published one periodic journal: "The bulletin of Sciences Academy of Georgia " Law Issues.
