Date of Foundation:
The Institute was founded in 1947 on the basis of the department on seismic construction that had existed within the system of the Georgian Academy of Sciences since 1941.

The main research trends are following:

• Earthquake resistance of structures (development of the methods of seismic microzoning, improvement of design methods of buildings and structures and ground bases);
• Structural Mechanics of spatial structures (numerical design methods for covering shells, arch dams and suspended systems, considering of materials);
• Mechanics of structural building materials (study of physical nature of deformation and concrete failure, investigation of durability and deformation of reinforced concrete structural elements, considering the effect of the environment and loading).

Scientific Contacts with Foreign Countries:
The Institute is collaborating with the Institute of Physics of Earth of the Academy of Sciences of Russia, Central Research Institute of building structures and Research Institute of concrete and reinforced concrete (Russia, Moscow), Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology (Academy of Sciences of the Republic Armenia, Gumri), Greek organization on earthquake engineering and security (Athens), Institute of theoretical and applied mechanics (Chekhia, Prague) et. al.

Publications:
The Institute has been engaged in issuing thematic volumes since 1965: structural mechanics of spatial structures, seismic resistance of buildings and the mechanics of spatial structures, seismic resistance of buildings and the mechanics of structural building materials. At present the volumes are not released.

Other Important Data:

The Institute is the leading organization on seismic resistance of hydrotechnical and a network of engineering structures in the former USSR. At present it is the main instituting that deals with the development of new standard documents on Earthquake Engineering applicable for the conditions of Georgia.
