About A.Kiknadze, Corresponding member of an Academy of Sciences of Georgia

Archil Kiknadze was born in 1933, August 26, he is Professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences.

In 1970 by the Scientific Board of the faculty of Geography of Lomonosow State University of Moscow an academic degree of Candidate of Sciences Geography was conferred on him. In 1991 was successfully held A Kiknadze,s defence of thesis for degree of Doctor of Sciences before the special Scientific Board of the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia (D 007.20.01). The topic of his dissertation was “ Coastal zone Morphodinamics and optimization of its application” (After the example of Georgian Black sea coast).

A.Kiknadze’s activity is connected with sea coastal zone morphodinamics which was established as an independent scientific branch on the junction of geography and geology in the particular with geomorphology, oceanology and sedimentology. The subject of his research is interaction zone of hydrosphere and lithosphere spreading from the starting point of maximum power wave influence on the sea floor till the wave surf zone. Exactly in these boarders energy is received as a result of wave deformation under this influence sea-coastal sediment alongshore drift (wave corresponding direction) movement on lythodynamic process is a mane factor of coastal zone relief formation and development on morphodynamics. A.Kiknadze is a representative of V.P.Zenkovich school who was a creator of this scientific branch. In Georgia A.Kiknadze is a first researcher and founder of this direction. Almost 50 years fruitful activity in planning offices, factories, high school and governmental organizations enabled him to combine qualities of good scholar, trainer of young experts and excellent manager.

In 1983 A.Kiknadze was awarded  rank of Emeritus Geologist of Georgia. In 1987 he has been elected honoured citizen of Poti, city  which especially suffered from coast erosion. He has received various  awards  from former USSR National Economy Achievement Exhibition-with Big memorable medal: “For the Scientific achievements and Propaganda in the Sphere of Nature Protection and First of All Sea Coast Protection”.

A.Kiknadze is Academician of engineering  Academy. He was several times elected as a member of Board Georgian Geographic Society of nature Protection and member of Nature protection commission of Georgian Academy of Sciences. During 1968-1991 he was member of bureau of coast protection of the Academy of sciences of Georgia.

Under A.Kiknadze’s guidance and his participation was elaborated and successfully applied protection and restoration of coastal landscape and management strategy (unlike widely spread “coast reinforcing” technogenical strategy which takes into consideration fight with the result of this event but not with the reason). This strategy also covers corresponding regulation of nature exploitation optimization. Scientific bases of strategy of cooperation with nature is the conception elaborated by A.Kiknadze about existence of interrupted lithodynamic systems (regions) which are developing almost independently and therefore it is possible to direct them. To A.Kiknadze also belongs also the creation and basing of scientific and organizational forms and non-ordinal legal and economic status for the realization of this strategy. On this ground in nature protection branch as an experiment in 1981 under the Council of Ministry has been established specialized service, conditionally named  “Georgian Sea protection”, which in reality it was managed by the scientific Institute of Morphodinamics, which was established  in the Institute of Geography  by A.Kiknadze on the base of the subsection with the similar designation. The Institute united fundamental – thematic, applied –classified  and prospecting-experimental researches, on the base of the analyses of the results the Institute in the time and space planned the corresponding practical decisions, implemented functions of united customer and at the same time carried out copyright and technical control over the completely realization of this solution. Practical results of first ten years of work (before management experiment  was cancelled in 1991) were estimated as scientifically well-grounded, economically expedient and socially necessary by international specialized commissions, foreign colleges and by USSR and Georgian governmental documents and by the documents of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Also all documents point out that in this management experiment is most valuable new quality of conceptual approach to the correlation of man and nature, that this is an excellent example when discussions about nature protection and optimization of its exploitation are made not by administrators and their boards, but by directorate of corresponding scientific Board who are responsible the condition of environment (and they are independent financially from land use private and governmental structures).
