Professor. Philologist.

In 1963 he defended a thesis for a Candidate's degree: "Georgian Redactions of Basil the Great's Asceticon".
In 1971 he defended a thesis for a Doctor's degree: "World outlook Problems in Rustaveli's Poem The Man in the Panther's Skin".
He is an expert in the field of the history of medieval Georgian literature and Georgian-Byzantine literary contacts.
He gives the following courses of lectures at Tbilisi State University:
History of old Georgian literature, Rustaveli studies and Georgian-Byzantine literary contacts.

He is Director of the Centre for Kartvelian (Georgian) Studies and Head of Laboratory of Georgian-Foreign Literary Research at Tbilisi State University.
He has been awarded the Prize of Ivane Javakhishvili (Tbilisi) and International Order of Merit - IOM (Cambridge).
