Gamkrelidze
Date of birth: 08. 05. 1933 Professor of geology
In 1963 I.Gamkrelidze defended a thesis for a degree of Candidate of geological sciences (Ph.D.) and in 1974-a dissertation for a doctorate in geological sciences (D.Sc) on "The mechanism of formation tectonic structures and some general problems of tectogenesis"; In 1967-1968 for 6 months I.Gamkrelidze was raising the level of his skill in methods of tectonics in Hannover, Munich and Claustall-Zellerfeld (Federal Republic of Germany) in cooperation with Prof. Von Gaertner, Prof. P.Schmidt-Tome and Prof. R.Adler; Specialization: structural geology, geodynamics, regional geology, seismotectonics; Current research interests: geodynamic evolution, mechanism of Alpine deformation, tectonic nappes and seismisity of the central segment of the Mediterranean (Alpine-Himalayan) belt. Since 1979 I.Gamkrelidze is professor of the Georgian Technical University and is giving courses of lecture in Geotectonics and Structural geology; In 1979-1990 I.Gamkrelidze was a leader of working groups of the Multilateral collaboration of the academies of sciences of the former socialist countries. In this connection he conducted geological investigations in East Alps,Carpathians and Balkanides. For over twenty years (1976-1999) I.Gamkrelidze was delivering lectures at the universities and scientific institutions of Munich, Warsaw, Bratislava, Prague, Budapest, Sofia, Bucharest, Vienna, Paris-Zude, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Rome, Moscow and other cities of former Soviet Union. His works are published in well known periodical of different countries of the world. He is holder of several International grant (NATO, INTAS). I.Gamkrelidze's scientific activities are closely connected with practice. Together with territory of the Caucasus he has been in a position to investigate the structure of Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathian and Balkanides. He has composed geological and tectonic maps of different scale for many regions of Georgia. Hi is one of the authors of International tectonic map of Europe (1:5 000 000), the tectonic map of the Caucasus (1:1 000 000) and editor-in chief of the new geological map of Georgia (1:500 000). Since 1976 I.Gamkrelidze has been participating in various international project and symposiums. Since 1976 he is a member of the International Association of Planetology (in 1976-1979 he has been a vice-president of the Association), of the Commission for International Tectonic Maps and of the Inter-department tectonic committee of Russia; Hi is an author of more than 170 publications, among them 8 books and text-book; I.Gamkrelidze is Djanelidze prize laureate of the Georgian Academy of Sciences; Since 1975 he is a Head of the Department of tectonics, regional geology and seismotectonics of Geological Institute of the Acad. Sci. of Georgia. Since 1988 he is an academician of the Georgian Acad. of Scienc. and a Head of Earth Sciences Department of the Academy
