Benedicte Balavadze

Date of Birth: 25.06.1909

Professor, doctor of sciences (Moscow, 1955), member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (elected 29.03.1974), Geophysics.

The main scientific interests lay in the field of geophysics (gravimetry methods of prospecting, the study of the structure, dynamics and the physical properties of the lithosphere, the investigation of earth tidesand earthquakes, earthquake prediction). His pedagogical activity is concerned with training of geophysicists at Tbilisi State University (the founder of the chair, chairman, professor).

The founder and the head of the department of gravimetry at the Institute of Geophysics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. The deputy director (1943-1950), the director (1950-1953, 1972-1987) and the Advisor (from 1987) of this institute.

Merited Scientist of Georgia (1961), The winner of State premium (1995).

The Honoured member of the Georgian Geological Society(1991), the member of Georgian Geographical Society, the Honoured president of Georgian Geophysical Society(1993).

An active member of the "Tsodna" Society in promoting of achievements of science and technology in Georgia and abroad. The author of popular-scientific publications.
