Main Scientific Directions:
Study of Indo-Iranic, Semitic, Turkic and Old Oriental Languages' phonetic-phonological and grammatical structures with comparative-typological methods. Theoretical, historical and descriptive lexicological aspects of these Languages. Aspects of Assyrian-Babylonic and Old Hebrew hymnography, middle centuries' Iranian Aesthetic thinking, Problems of Persian and Turkish Poetry. History of literature of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Azer, Byzantine, Sirian and their relationship with Georgian literature. Near East folklore. Social - Economic development of Near and Middle East Countries and Political history in Middle Ages. Modern national, ethnocultural and ethnodemographical processes. Scientific Contacts with Foreign Countries:
The Institute has  broad  scientific  contacts  with  the   scientific centers and universities of Post Soviet Republics, Europe, America   and Near and Middle East Countries. Scientific workers of the Institute are involved in the international scientific programs, they are taking part in   organization  of  international  scientific  forums.The    Institute research workers have published their monographs in  abroad   and  their articles  are  published  in  international   scientific  journals   and bulletins as well. Among then are articles written with cooperation  of foreign colleagues. Organization of joint   scientific  conferences  are planned  with  the   collaboration  of  Foreign  (among   then    Eastern Countries) scientific  centers.  Postgraduates  from   Europe  and  Asia systematically have their a  probation   periods  in  the  Institute  of Oriental Studies.
     Student of the "Tbilisi Institute of Asia and Africa" for  various period have their approbation of the Highest  educational   Institutions Cairo, Damascus, Istanbul, Trabzon, Teheran and Pekin.

In 1991 on the basis of the Institute was founded the "Tbilisi Institute of Asia and Africa" that trains students in different specialties: Eastern languages and culture, History of Eastern Countries, International relationships, Politology and international journalism (Rector G.Chikovani).

From 1993 at the Institute functions "International Research Center for East-West Relations" (President of the Center - E.Shevardnadze, Deputy - Acad.Th.Gamkrelidze).

The Institute is a founder of the "Association of relationship between Georgia and Arabic Countries", "Society of Georgian-Iran cooperation and scientific-cultural relationship", "Georgian Orientalists' Association".
