MAIN DIRECTIONS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH:
- Elaboration of meteorological, hydrological and agrometeorological forecasting methods;
- Investigation of disasterous natural phenomena (hurricane, squall, heavy rainfall, hail, drought, lightning, flood, mudstream, snow avalanches, etc.) and elaboration of methods for their forecasting;
- Investigation of clouds and precipitation-forming processes
- Working out of methods and means for the modification of hydrometeorological processes;
- Determination of climatic, agroclimatic and renewable energy (hydro, wind and solar) resources;
- Analysis of the impact of hydrometeorological factors and anthropogenic activities on natural environment and climate. Elaboration of recommendations for the elimination of harmful          consequences of the anthropogenic impact on the environment;
- Revealing of the climate change trends and estimation of their impact on the economy;
- Study, assessment and forecasting of pollution level and the ecological state of the environment (atmosphere, soil, water) for the protection and rational use of natural resources.

SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES, JOINT ACTIVITIES:
In the field of research in hydrometeorology the Institute has scientific contacts with the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States (Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine,        Kazakhstan, etc.). At the time the Institute also cooperated with Cuba, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Cambodia - in Agrometeorology, with Syria and Mali in Hydrometeorology, with Bulgaria and    Israel - in the Physics of Atmosphere. At the present time the Director of Institute Acad. G.Svanidze is the President of the Georgian National Committee of UNESCO's International        Hydrological Programme and the Advisor on Hydrology to the Permanent Representative of Georgian with the World Meteorological Organization. The Institute is participating in the UNDP/GEF - Government of Georgia joint project on Climate Change (GEO/96/G31). The leading specialists of the Institute are taking part in the work of Intergovernmental Commission on Oceanography (Prof. I.Khomeriki), in different projects on Marine Science, Oceanologocal training and Information exchange, in the NATO Programme on the Black Sea Research.

PERIODIC ISSUES OF THE INSTITUTE (NAME, PRESENT STATES):
In the period of 1953-1997 the Institute has published 100 issues of  its Transactions which till 1992 were published in Russian under the title "Trudy ZakNIGMI", vol. 1-99 by the "Gidrometeoizdat" Pablishing House in Leningrad (St.Petersburg). In 1996 the Institute pablished the 100-th volume of its Transactions in Georgian, which contains the summaries of articles in Russian and English.Currentey the Institute succeeds to publish its Transactions 1 or 2 times annually. At the same time the mentioned above Publishing House "Gidrometeoizdat" has        published more then 50 monographs, representing all directions of Institute's scientific activity.     In 1998 it is planned to publish 2 volumes of Transactions  and 3 monograps in Georgian and Russian.

OTHER IMPORTANT DATA:
The Institute posesses: (a) 9-store Laboratory building (9x450 m2) with 1-store wing (750 m2) at the given address; (b) 1-hectare lot for the Orkhevi Experimental Base with the capital 2-store building (1000 m2) located in the vicinity of Tbilisi Airport  (Kakheti Highway, 104); Field research bases in Dzveli-Anaga (1,5 hectares, 370 m above the sea-level), at Paravani Lake (3,0 hectares, 2200m.s.l.), in Dusheti (Atmospheric Electrcity Research Pavilion, 60 m2, 660 m.s.l.)  with corresponding Laboratory and dwelling buildings, auxiliary facilities.
