Date of foundation:
In 1930 the department of Manuscripts was established in Georgian State Museum on the basis of manuscripts and historical documents of the Scociety for Dissemination of Literacy, Historical-ethnographical Societies, Ecclesiastical Museum and Tbilisi State University. In 1941 the museum entered the system of Academy of Sciences. According to the decission of Georgian Academy of Sciences, the aforementioned department became the Institute of Manuscripts on the bases of the decree of 30th of June, 1958.

Main scientific trends of the Institute are:
Scholarly description of the V-XIX cc. Georgian manuscripts,and manuscripts on other languages and historical documents; descriptions of private archives and their catalogization; textological, codicological and paleographical studies of manuscripts; elaborating and introduction of the manuscripts' curement, hygiene and restoring methods.

Zaza Aleksidze - Corresponding Member of Georgian Academy of Sciences , Dr. of Historical Sciences, Professor.

  • Catalogue of newly discovered Georgian Manuscripts found in St. Katherine's Abbey (Mount Sinai) in Geogian, Greek and English languages / with St. Katherine's Abbey (Athens)
