The Institute of Radiology and Interventional Diagnostics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences  is the leading scientific establishment in the field of radiology. The scientific-research work of the Institute is coordinated by the Georgian Academy of Sciences in the framework of the fundamental research program. The main scientific trend of the Institute is "Early Complex Diagnostics and Treatment". This refers to early diagnosis and adequate treatment of  CNS, cardiovascular system, thorax, abdominal and pelvic organ diseases, diagnosis and treatment of systemic diseases, new aspects  of acute leukosis treatment and the role of radial diagnosis in establishing the brain  injuries in children, the diagnosis of aortic vessels pathologies, early complex diagnosis of the mammary gland diseases,  treatment of the liver primary and secondary  tumors by transcutaneous alcoholization.  The obtained scientific results are implemented into  clinical practice. The methods of  diagnostics and optimal treatment tactics have been advancing on the basis of a complex investigation.

The Institute is well equipped with universal medical diagnostic facilities  enabling to carry out MRI and CT tomography, a digital subtraction angiography, mammography, videoendoscopy, ultrasound diagnostics  with color dopplerography, gamma camera for radionuclide diagnostics, X-ray  apparatus for neuro and functional diagnostics, CT analyzers successfully applied at biochemical and hematologic laboratories. The educational component of the Institute provides with highly elaborated medical curricula for the post-graduate course in radiology.

The Institute belongs to a new type of medical institution, the medical activity of which is governed by the Scientific Council. It has achieved remarkable success since  its foundation.

-         It has been defended 8 degrees of Doctor of Medical Sciences and 31 degrees of Candidate of Medical Sciences; it has been prepared 14 post-graduate students and more than 110 radiologists, who nowadays work in the different regions of Georgia

-                           It has been published 2 collected works, more than 1500 scientific works, 21 inventions and 8 monographs in Georgia as well as abroad. Among them could be mentioned “CT Atlas of the Abdomen” (Moscow, 1991), “Diagnostic and Treatment of Liver Abscesses” (Budapest, 1993), “Endoscopy Atlas of Esophagus, Stomach and Duodenum Diseases” (Tbilisi, 2000), “MRI of the Brain Diseases” (Tbilisi, 2001), “MRI of the Spine and Spinal Cord” ( Tbilisi, 2001) which are very important and useful sources for  physicians and scientists working in the field of diagnostics.

-                           The Ist International Congress (1997) and three International Symposia of Radiologists were held in Georgia:  “New Technologies in Medicine” (Tbilisi, 1994), ”Radiology: Insight into the New Millennium” (2000), ”New Technologies in the New Millennium” (2001), “ New Technologies  in Radiology”(2002).

-                            A group of  scientists of the Institute has been awarded  State Prize in the field of science (1996) for the work “Creation of the new type scientific-research institute and establishment of  new methods of diagnostics and noninvasive, organ sparing operations in  hepato-pancreatic diseases in medical practice of the Republic”.

-                           The Institute is the initiator of the establishment of the Georgian Association of Radiology (1997),  which, one of the first among the CIS countries, became the member of the European Association of Radiology.

-                           The Institute, along with the Georgian Academy of Sciences and Association of Georgian Radiologists, established the scientific journal “Georgian Journal of Radiology”. This quartely scientific journal has been publishing  since 1997 in Georgian, Russian and English.

The Institute is  the University clinic. On the base of the Institute are functioning the Chair of Radiology and Ultrasound Diagnostics of I. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Chair of Radiology of the State Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, postgraduate courses,  the residency program in Radiology, the training center of  CT, MRI and US diagnostics.

The Institute has close contacts and joint scientific cooperation with:
