Founded in 1933 at Tbilisi State University, In 1945 it joined the system of Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

Estimation of regularities of development, origin and structure of the Geosphere on the territory of Georgia and its adjacent regions., Creation of scientific foundation for protection and rational use of natural resources.
