Institute of Botany was established in 1933 on the base of  some departments of the Tbilisi Botanical Garden. These departments have a long history, e.g. the Herbarium collections were founded in the middle of the 19th century.

The Herbarium of the institute is one of the oldest and richest funds of the botanical documentation. Approximately a million specimens of species / intra-species taxas are stored in its collections.

1.      Bakuriani Alpine High-mountain Botanical Garden

2.      Kazbegi  High-mountain Ecological Station

3.      Shiraki Experimental Base

 

Principal Scientific Directions:

·        Researches on the Georgia’s plant diversity

·        Researches on the problems of the ecology of the high-mountain vegetation

·        Researches on plant reproduction biology questions

·        Researches on physiological mechanisms of plant adaptations to extreme conditions

·        Development of scientific principles and practical recommendations fore the protection and utilization of the Georgia’s plant resources

·        Ex situ conservation of the Caucasus’ / Georgia’s endangered species

 

Total staff: 141; among them 66 Candidates of Biol. Sci., 10 Doctors of Biol. Sci.

 

The institute cooperates with botanical institutions of the USA, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan and other countries.
