Institute of Botany was established in 1933 on the base of  some departments of the Tbilisi Botanical Garden. These departments have a long history, e.g. the Herbarium collections were founded in the middle of the 19^th century.

The Herbarium of the institute is one of the oldest and richest funds of the botanical documentation. Approximately a million specimens of species / intra-species taxas are stored in its collections.

Principal Scientific Directions:

·        Researches on the Georgia’s plant diversity

·        Researches on the problems of the ecology of the high-mountain vegetation

·        Researches on plant reproduction biology questions

·        Researches on physiological mechanisms of plant adaptations to extreme conditions

·        Development of scientific principles and practical recommendations fore the protection and utilization of the Georgia’s plant resources

·        Ex situ conservation of the Caucasus’ / Georgia’s endangered species

Total staff: 141; among them 66 Candidates of Biol. Sci., 10 Doctors of Biol. Sci.

The institute cooperates with botanical institutions of the USA, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan and other countries.
