Institute was founded in 1958 according to the 23 of January decree of the Presidium of Georgian Academy of Sciences. The scientific direction of institute is determined by its regional function to investigate the economy, sociology, psychology, ethnology, archeology, folklore and dialectology of South-Western Georgia. The director of Institute is Associated member of Georgian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Sciences Iuri Bibileishvili. He is also the head of the Gonio-Apsaros permanent archeological expedition and the editor of the "Essays of Adjara History". There are two associated members of Georgian Academy of Sciences (David Khakhutashvili and Vakhtang Shamiladze), 9 doctors of sciences and 19 candidates of sciences. Institute has regular contacts with the scientific establishments in Russia, Turkey, Great Britain, Germany.
