Institute of History of Georgian Art is the major art historical research centre in Georgia. Its goal is to study Georgian art and Georgian cultural heritage in general (including works created on its territory and imported by the representatives of other nations and cultures), to present it in the wide context of art of its neighbouring countries and the world. Apart from Georgian art, problems of the Antique, Sasanid, Byzantine, Armenian, Islamic, Western European and Russian art history are also researched at the Institute.

Since its foundation the Institute of History of Georgian Art closely co-operates with diverse research institutions in the ex-Soviet Union, Europe and the USA. International co-operation was especially widened from 1970s. In 1974-1989 the Institute actively participated in the organisation of 6 International Symposia (1974 – Bergamo, 1977, 1983, 1989 – Tbilisi, 1980 – Bari – Lecce, 1986 – Pavia and Torba monastery).
