KEY ISSUES OF THE HISTORY OF PEDIATRICS AND ADOLESCENT
MEDICINE IN GEORGIA
"Incomparable Karabadin" (XI c.), "Physician's
Book" (XIII c.), "Iadigar Daudi" (XVI c.) are the most ancient medical
books in Georgian which have reached us. Anatomical and physiological peculiarities of
child's organism, issues touching child care, hygiene, morphological changes in different
diseases and their treatment are well highlighted in the above-mentioned sources.
It is supposed that while teaching the art of medicine in the xenons of
the Georgian medieval academies of Ikalto and Gelati (X-XIII cc.), diseases of children
certainly would not have been left out.
In 1921 the first pediatric department was established at the faculty
of medicine of Tbilisi University; 1930 - the special faculty of pediatrics with numerous
departments in newly founded Medical Institute; 1931 - Scientific Society of
Pediatricians; 1959 - Scientific Investigation Institute of Pediatrics.

CURRENT SITUATION
According to official data, children population (0-14y.) in Georgia
in 1995 was 1260037, adolescents (15-19y.) - 416454. In 1997 were born 52020. In 1997,
1043866 children (0-14y.) and 124749 adolescents (15-19y.) were under medical supervision.
Infant mortality rate in 1997 was 21.7.
The governing body of the children's health care system in Georgia is
