DialUp Setup for Windows95/98

Go into "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Dial-Up Networking".
Choose "Connections", "Make New Connection" and fill in a name for your connection.
Enter your modem-specific information and under "Configure/General" choose the highest speed of your modem but do not check the box below this.
Under "Configure/Connection", use 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit. Call preferences are "Wait for dial tone before dialing", and "Cancel the call if not connected after 200 seconds".
Under "Advanced", select only "Hardware Flow Control" and "Modulation Type" "Standard".
Under "Configure/Options" nothing should be checked except under status control. Click on "OK".
On the "Next" screen, enter the "Telephone number" of the destination, then "Next", and then "Finish".
Once the new connection icon appears, right click on it and choose "Properties", and then "Server Type".
Choose "PPP:WINDOWS 95, WINDOWS NT 3.5, Internet" and don't check any advanced options. Check at least TCP/IP under allowed network protocols.
Under TCP/IP settings, choose "Server assigned IP address", "Server assigned name server addresses", and "Use default gateway on remote network". Click on "OK".
When the user double clicks on the icon to bring up the "Connect To" window to dial, the user must fill in the "User name" and "Password" fields, and then hit the "Connect" button.

Proxy Auto Configuration

The Netscape Navigator allows automatic configuration of the proxy that should be used for its request. Such configuration is done by running a JavaScript function located in the URL specified to the Navigator. AcNet is now making such a function available to its customers to allow automatic switching from www-cache.theacnet.org to direct connections when the proxy is not available. The Navigator will automatically retry a previously unresponsive proxy after 30 minutes, then after 1 hour from the previous try (always adding an extra 30 minutes).

To set your Navigator perform the following steps:

Select the Options -> Network Preferences -> Proxies menu from the main menu in Netscape Navigator versions 2.X and 3.X and Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies in Netscape Communicator 4.X
Select the "Automatic Proxy Configuration" radio button.
Enter the following URL in the URL area: http://www.theacnet.org/acnet/proxy.pac
Select "OK"

The Automatic Proxy Configuration is now set to use the www-cache.theacnet.org when available and a direct connection when the AcNet Proxy server is not available.
